Acknowledging Katherine Anne (Porter)
Part I
Departure to Eternity
No wind favors he who has no destined port.
Montaigne
August, 2216
Reenacting a quaint ceremony from their pasts, they giddily motioned the specially commissioned brown-skinned servants to bring iced limeade. They had grown up together, married one another’s cousin, sister or aunt and maintained familial secrets that shook the world and that made history. They set the prices of gold, water, air and food and their coffers were filled with the fruits of compound interest. They commanded all militaries, skies and space.
They knew one another’s business and on this day they would ride the electromagnetic elevators down, down, into the ground, to waiting accommodations.
For those remaining on the surface, this day would be their last day but for the chosen, eternity would begin today on this day.
~ Stephen J. Bergstrom
