In Yesterday’s Visionaries in Today’s World, Stephen J. Bergstrom gives creative voice to visionary souls in process of awakening.
Through imaginative device, Yesterday’s Visionaries in Today’s World reveals two contrasting visions that shape contemporary existence.
In one, conquerors traverse the world as a series of endless privileges secured through material means and patriarchal oppression.
In the other, conquered and oppressed individuals and groups perceive that consciousness animates nature, humanity and the spirit of a Living Earth.

Acknowledging Mary Pickford (Gladys Louise Smith)
When Doug, Charlie, D.W. and I formed United Artists, we thought we knew much when, in fact, we knew little. In assuming control of the distribution of our films, we broke strangleholds on our incomes and abilities to profit by our work and opened the doors to independent filmmakers.
The Great Fairbanks, Chaplin, Griffith and Pickford, United as Artists!
Hollywood would never be the same. For at least a while.
When I sold War Bonds, even then, I thought much was known to me. I thought I knew about life and war, good and evil and I thought War Bonds broke strangleholds for the good of humanity. Little did I know that whatever was my work, forming a company or selling bonds, all of my labor funneled upwards into strange hands and that my creativity had become captured labor to others.
At the end of my life, in Pickfair with alcoholism upon me, my ringlets gone and without desire to see anyone, Buddy my only companion, the things you heard were true – I spoke with visitors only by telephone from my bed. Something else was coming, something I didn’t know and could not understand was approaching me.
What a strange life that was. Hollywood was strange and I’m proud that we cracked the code. The glitz can blind you and the moment can eat you. Artists should be independent and their work unfettered. That is true. That’s what Doug and I intuited, Charlie and of course, D.W. That was the great thing we thought we knew.
But blinded by the glitz and eaten by the moment, we missed what our souls were telling us.
Here’s something more true. There is a greater independence available to you, far greater. You are already an independent artist and your work is, by virtue of whom you are, already unfettered.
I went through life and like Chief Seattle says, the dead possess power and greater truth awaits and in the hands of his people, stalks the land and burns holes in the plans of the plotters, in the hands of the stranglers.
Let that sink in. Greater truth awaits but comes at different times to different people. For me, in this great willowy state that was the something else coming upon me at Pickfair, applicable to me, to my path, to my way home. To form a company that breaks the rules is a small thing. That was my life path but now my path has expanded beyond the grasp of the stranglers and I want to share this with you. I am an actress you know and the cameras like me.
Picture me smiling when I tell you this. You are the artist, the only true artist. Your life is your production, the only true production. When you understand that, you will become a Truly United Artist and you will make all that is good. Let that sink in.
